Open Access Resources

Open Access Resources - a list of scientific databases that do not require license agreements and subscriptions. Resources from these databases are open to the public, their usage is free, downloading and copying in scientific or educational purposes is avaliable, if the original work is properly cited.

Biology

Burckhardtsource - Burckhardtsource.org is a semantic digital library created within the ERC project “The European correspondence to Jacob Burckhardt” coordinated by Prof. Maurizio Ghelardi (Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa). The time span 1842–1897 witnesses a period of significant cultural transformations. Texts also offer content-related information. Indeed, a semantic annotation tool enables users to create semantically structured data. The combined use of the semantic annotator Pundit and the customised vocabulary Korbo offers an effective tool for data retrieval, representing different data – such as metadata and annotations – in several ways, according to the way users want to put them in relation.
CODECS - CODECS is a collaborative web platform which draws heavily on data management technologies from Semantic MediaWiki and its spin-offs to accommodate resources for the benefit of scholars of Celtic studies worldwide. By far its most ambitious ongoing project is the *selgā catalogue, a research and teaching tool focusing on annotated descriptions of historical sources (texts and manuscripts) and bibliographic records, with well over 15,000 entries and counting. Also of special note is Tionscadal na Nod, which serves as an aid to interpreting abbreviations and other devices employed by scribes of vernacular Irish manuscripts.

Artefacts - Artefacts is a digital online encyclopedia devoted to archaeological small findings. It gathers data from publications, museums and private collections to offer an image of objects forms, with a description, chronology and illustrations, as well as automatic maps showing the distribution of registered objects. Artefacts is fed by c. 120 authors from various countries, and grows up according to the contributions of field archaeologists, museum curators and especially students. It now appears to its users as a major tool for identifying and studying archaeological small findings in Europe.

BIBLINDEX - As an index of biblical references found in both Western and Eastern Christian literature, at present covering the first four centuries but with the intention of extending over the whole of Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages, BIBLINDEX aims to provide a common tool at the junction of two research areas: biblical textual scholarship and patristic and linguistic studies, investigating the understanding and use of the Bible in the writings of ancient authors. Two particularly innovative features of BIBLINDEX are its spatiotemporal breadth and its multilingual corpus. Access to the data is completely free.

Controversia et Confessio - The research and editing project Controversia et Confessio documents the theological disputes that broke out after the promulgation of the Augsburg Interim from 1548 and its conceptual alternative, the Leipzig Interim. Contrary to the print version the online database offers a complete bibliographical documentation of the project. This includes more than 2000 records with full title, information on authorship, printing locations and printer, years of publication and current library locations, scans of the title page and frequently also summaries of the content.

Corpus Coranicum - The project Corpus Coranicum of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (2007-2024) is exploring the Qur'an from three different angles: (1) Textual History: databases of ancient manuscripts and variant readings give insights into its textual history, (2) Qur’an in History: a documentation of texts from the cultural and religious environment outlines Late Antique features in the text, (3) History of the Text: a literary-chronological commentary studies the Qur’an as a developing speech proclaimed during more than 20 years to a changing audience. The digital publication is also providing other digital research tools like its font ("Coranica") and a text concordance.

The ADS maintains three bibliographic databases containing more than 13 million records covering publications in Astronomy and Astrophysics, Physics, and the arXiv e-prints. Abstracts and full-text of major astronomy and physics publications are indexed and searchable through the new ADS modern search form as well as a classic search form. A browsable paper form is also available.
